When I start thinking about food, it's difficult to stop. I started thinking about my favorite foods from restaurants around town and I came up with this list:
Junior's Burgers: A double cheeseburger, this place is amazing and uses fresh meat and makes everything to order. Literally the best burgers in town. And you have to love that it is locally owned too!
Jarling's Custard Cup: Cold fudge sundae with bananas. I will literally never, ever stray from this selection. It's just not worth it.
The Courier: Turkey croissant, fries, and a chocolate-banana milkshake.
Za's: Make your own pizza! White sauce, Roma tomatoes, spinach, feta cheese, mozzarella, and red peppers.
Billy Barooz: Patty melt me.
Papa Del's: Deep dish sausage, you can't go wrong!
Milo's: Steak, steak, steak! John got the duck and absolutely loved it as well.
The Beef House: All I need is the salad bar, soup, and the rolls.
Ko Fusion: I'm not sure what I get, but at the dollar sushi days, I get everything and love it all.
I am a first-time adult, married woman, and nurse who is one year into her career. Naturally, most days are a hilarious adventure.

New Stuff I Love
I get really hyped when I find new stuff I like. And I would like to share them with you!
Netflix - we watch lots of movies on here and get blu ray discs sent to us and love those
Hulu Plus - we watch our TV shows on here, we cancelled cable and haven't looked back!
Economy-sized Breyers - this doesn't need an explanation
My Old Navy Credit Card - we just bought John's birthday gifts from Old Navy and Gap and we got a $60 gift card from it, and we can get free shipping from online orders. They have talls online so I get those shirts, tank tops, etc from online. And in addition to gift cards, you get online coupons, so I just got $87 worth of clothes and paid $25 for it!
Cherokee Tall Scrubs - I finally found something that fits!
Prairie Gardens ceramic pots - love love these, I have 5 now! They don't cost much but are really cute. I saw something similar at a boutique in Champaign, and it was $50 more for the same thing.
Natural peanut butter, Ghirardelli milk chocolate chips, a spoon, and a glass of milk - heaven in a spoon. followed by a glass filled with milk.
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand - amazing, amazing New York Times Best Seller about a WWII survivor. Read it. You won't sleep until you finish it. I stayed up until 3am the first night and 2am the second night and finished it. Universal just bought the rights to the book and are going to start filming. Hillenbrand wrote Seabiscuit, so she's pretty ballin.
Lupe Fiasco, Lasers - his newest album, it's great. I love working out to it. Great songs, and it's about real stuff. He is clearly educated and knows what's going on in the world today. Love it.
Art from friends/family - I have some amazingly talented friends/family. And I love photography and art. So I thought I would combine the two. So I've started getting work from these awesomely talented people and decorate the Kleber Estate with it! I've started off my collection with a painting from my cousin, Stephanie Pisula, who is a very talented artist. We plan on getting more. I've just ordered a bunch of prints from Andrew Pritchard, photographer-extraordinaire. I'm pretty excited about framing those and know exactly were I'm putting them in our house. Oh, and check out his blog. There's a link to it on the right navigation bar.

Chattin About Statins
As many of you know, I'm a nurse. If you know that, you probably know that my in-law's own a gym called Personal Performance. If you know that, you probably also know that they are very passionate about natural-living. By this I mean eating all natural foods, not using medications, fitness, nutrition, spiritual health, and being knowledgeable about our world/environment and how it affects us in both negative and positive ways. I've had many opportunities to talk with them and others that try to live the same. I think in our society, we are very trusting of the medical system and doctors that we can sell ourselves short in many instances. With the invent of the internet, many people are now able to look at clinical studies online, research not only all of their medications, but also adverse effects of long-term usage of certain medications.
There is one group of medications that have been prescribed for years, but researches are now finding that it can be extremely toxic to us. Many people now take statin drugs (Zocor, Lipitor, Levacor, etc) in an effort to reduce their cholesterol. With heart disease being the #1 killer of women in American, cholesterol has gotten a bad rap. And as a society, yes, we do consume too much BAD cholesterol. But there are two kinds of cholesterol.. LDLs and HDLs. Americans typically are low on the good stuff (HDLs) and high on the bad stuff (LDLs). Anyways, the way these medications work is by simply poising the liver so that it does not produce cholesterol. However, cholesterol is very, very necessary.
Wiki cholesterol definition: Cholesterol is a waxy steroid of fat that is manufactured in the liver or intestines. It is used to produce hormones and cell membranes and is transported in the blood plasma of all mammals. It is an essential structural component of mammalian cell membranes. It is required to establish proper membrane permeability and fluidity.
So basically, we need this stuff for our cells to function. However, I think it is safe to assume that preventing our livers from producing this substance in the first place can have some major negative, long-term effects. We need it for our cells to live and function ... but if we produce too much of it, it builds up on our vessel walls.. so let's keep our liver from producing it? But wait. We need it.. confusing.
Obviously there is a huge problem in America with everyone consuming too much bad cholesterol in our diet. Duhs. So obviously it's great if we have less so that there is less building up on our arteries (which manifests itself into coronary artery disease, strokes, heart attacks, etc.) But what happened to a diet that doesn't over-do it with processed fats and cause these high levels. It's like saying that it's okay to eat lots of bad cholesterol if you just take this pill that prevents your liver from making it. Why do we have to take pills with major adverse effects? It's definitely easier to get a script every month for Zocor than to decrease the amount of processed, unnatural fats in our diet and deny ourselves of that delicious slice of Pizza Hut pizza, that delectable McDouble, or those Tyson chicken nugs....denying ourselves of deliciousness is hard, but it will keep yourself from definite and certain major health problems.
So, here are some interesting articles talking about the dangers of these drugs that are now being clinically documented. Enjoy!
Researchers Document the Dangers of Statins
Statins Kill Your Brain
Dangers of rosuvastatin identified before and after FDA approval
The Hidden Truth About Cholesterol Lowering Drugs (this one is a book)
A Bad Week for Statins (this is a doctor's blog, references a week various news articles related to the new evidence outlining the dangers of these drugs)
I could add like 10 more, but I just got off a 12 hour shift and I'm getting sleepy and grumpy. So please check this stuff out, do some research for yourself, Google various statin topics, etc. I'm not the one with all the right answers. I've had an opportunity to see the medical field from a bedside nurse's eye, but also have had a lot of exposure to natural-living and through that been able to see some inconsistencies and discrepancies with in our health care system in America.
It's important to be personally informed about your health, meds, and nutrition so that you are taking care of yourself! I see so many people that have not taken care of themselves, or not questioned the medications their on, their diet, their lifestyles.. and a lot of these people end up paying the price when they're 65, 70, and into their 80's having open heart surgery to get multiple coronary arteries bypassed because they're completely occluded.
Okay. Goodnight at 9am, time for bed :-)

Ugh, Growing Up.
How I Know I'm Growing Up ...
- Daily coffee fixes are essential to life
- I have a retirement folder in our filing cabinet
- When we go out, it's at 9:30pm and not 11:30 pm because we're both exhausted by midnight
- On the nights that I don't work, we both read books before bed.. now we just need matching striped PJ's, sleeping caps, and gold-rimmed glasses and we'll be good to go!
- We actually started planning our dinners ahead of time and coordinate our grocery shopping to accommodate that .. uugh ..
- I want to go out to eat, not for the food, but so we don't have to do dishes
- I no longer just eat things because they are yummy, but because they keep me full longer
- I've shopped at Lowe's
- I don't care what we eat when we go family/friends for dinner because it's a meal that I don't have to make
- When talking to my dad about the next car we want to purchase within the next 2-3 years, my dad says "you need to buy a car you plan to have for 10-odd years, if you're planning on having kids in less than 10 years, you better get one that fits car seats!" **wave of nausea and lightheadedness over takes me**
- Instead of thinking of clothes, new tech gadgets to buy, I get excited about furniture
- I love BINGO
- DVD/TV show rotation: Harry Potters, Shreks, Friends, Family Guy, American Dad, the Incredibles, Monsters vs. Aliens, Disney, and back to the beginning
- John and I still call each other names and have to be told to "settle down now"
- I need my nightly bowl of ice cream to survive
- I still get my Easter basket. DUHH..
- Legos are a perfectly awesome birthday gift
- Despite being a nurse, I still need to talk to my mom when I'm sick
- Car trips include BINGO
- I use my Beauty and the Beast cup daily.. used to use my Tinkerbell ones until it broke!
- I love BINGO

Happy Nurses Week!
Writing this post reminds me of what I was doing at this time last year.. I was getting ready to FINALLY graduate with my BSN. I was back in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, hanging out with these amazing people:
I learned a lot in Iowa. And not just about nursing.. IWC is where I met my roomie:
It's where my friendship with Thomas commenced in the good ol Nemitz Suites:
I had a lot of good times, including Christmas sweater bar crawls:
Absurd amounts of homework:
Traveling to Greece:
Getting pinned and graduating:
But, most of all I will miss the amazing friendships that I developed with an amazing group of girls.. plus a Thomas or two. I can't believe last year we were getting sick to our stomachs right before our finals and ATIs.. we were stressed about passing the NCLEX, finding jobs, and figuring out our next steps. Now some are married, some have babies, some have moved... but we're all nurses! This last year of being an RN has made all that stress worth it.
Things about my IWC ladies that I will always miss: corny mac, snuggles with the roomie, trips to the alleys, 16 hours clinicals an hour and a half away, Katie throwing up in the hallway after class one fine morning, the Maccomb bar crawl where Katie cleared the dance floor, my predictable classroom attire (green sweater, orange sweater, grey sweater, different green sweater, and then back to the beginning), photos in front of Christmas trees, trips to FUN CITY, Wesleyan's bday in Iowa City, the many ridiculous clinical experiences, and a helium-filled balloon or too.
Miss you ladies, hope you are all well.
So thank a nurse you know sometime this week... because every day they save lives, hold the hands of people when they're dying and family cannot be there, are with people during their most vulnerable and embarrassing moments, are there for the occasional 'come to Jesus' meeting when a reality check is necessary, advocate for their patients, and deal with some poopy, poopy situations... and that's just another day at work.
